Special Avedem meet evokes poor response

A special gram sabha convened at Avedem on Wednesday to provide details on the National Rurban Mission (NRuM) project evoked poor response, as only 10 persons were present at the meeting.

Speaking to The Goan, Avedem sarpanch Shanti Mascarenhas informed that last week, Goa Architecture College principal Dr Ashish Rege had explained about National Rurban Mission and had also informed that Quepem taluka has been selected for rurban development which will be carried out in all the 11 panchayats 
of Quepem.  
“A special gram sabha was convened to discuss and explain to the locals about the development works which be carried out in the villages of Quepem in eco-tourism, human development, basic facilities and others,” 
said Mascarenhas.  
When asked why there was poor turn out for the special gram sabha, Mascarenhas said the panchayat had also made an announcement in the church last Sunday informing about the gram sabha, but only a few attended.  
When asked further why the gram sabha was called in a hurry or whether they can take convene another meeting, the sarpanch said the government has given the deadline of April 15 to submit the details of special gram sabha.  
A local, Florina who was present for the gram sabha, said any such projects meant for sustainable development of the village need to be welcomed. Ceily D’Costa said it would have been better if some government officials had visited the panchayat and explained more details, but it did not happen.
