Stating that a special disability cell to redress the grievances of special children would be set up in the Social Welfare Department within eight days, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant requested institutions to implement the 4 per cent policy of reservation to disabled persons as per Right of Persons with Disabilities Act rules.
He was addressing a function organised by the Social Welfare Department in association with Sanjay Centre for Special Education to celebrate the International Day for Persons with Disabilities at Sanjay school in Porvorim.
Others present at the function included RDA Minister Michael Lobo, Director of Social Welfare Parag Nagarsekar, Chairman of Sanjay Centre for Special Education Gurudas Pawaskar, Utpal Parrikar and Porvorim BJP Mandal President Kunda Chodankar.
He said necessary facilities would be set up in schools to facilitate admission of special children.
“To enable special children to live a dignified life, we have to make them self-reliant and to assure them better livelihood, reservation for this section need to be implemented properly,” said Sawant while appealing to concerned institutions to follow and execute the roster.
“The government is committed to safeguard the interest of special children and have been doing everything for their betterment and will continue to do so in future,” said Sawant.
Speaking further, the chief minister underscored the need for a Special Disability Cell to redress the grievances of special children and said the government has decided to form a Special Disability Cell in this regard.
Chairman of Sanjay Centre for Special Education Guruprasad Pawaskar said the United Nations has recommended Sanjay Center for Special Children for having the highest attendance of special children in the school in the country. “Every effort has been made at the centre to help special children to live respected and independent lives. Training or skill development is essential so to avail of government schemes and efforts would be made through the EDC,” he said.
Ex-Chairman Bal Bhavan Kunda Chodankar and Utpal Parrikar, son of former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar, also spoke on the occasion. The chief minister earlier inaugurated a blood donation camp on the occasion.
