The Goa University will soon get a new set of state-of-the-art instruments and facilities such as a ‘minus 20 degrees deep freezer’, powder X-ray diffractometer, Raman spectrometer, 2-D gas chromatography, closed-cycle superconducting quantum interface device, binocular polarising microscope and liquid nitrogen generation plant.

The Goa University has floated the tender for procurement and maintenance of these instruments and facilities. If the procedure goes smoothly within two months all instruments will be installed in the varsity.

Mostly the new instruments are procured for the physics department under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) which is a centrally sponsored scheme (CSS) launched in 2013. The funding pattern is in the ratio of 60:40 for general category States, 90:10 for special category states and 100 per cent for union territories.

Some instruments such as minus 20 degrees deep freezer, binocular polarising microscope and vertical laminar airflow system have been ordered for the biotechnology department.

Goa University has a set of such instruments in different departments.

Raman spectrometer is used to characterize materials, measure temperature, and find the crystallographic orientation of a sample.
