Special drive: 42 disabled enrolled in voters' list

It was a special exercise for a special group of first-time voters as 42 disabled persons were enrolled from Sanvordem constituency to ensure their rightful role in the electoral process, beginning with the next assembly elections.
The special enrollment drive started on September 15 and will conclude on October 14. With a view to reach out to the persons with disabilities, a special drive was conducted by Dharbandora Deputy Collector and Electoral Registration Officer Agnelo Fernandes at Mollem Panchayat, Dharbandora Panchayat, Sanvordem Panchayat and Collem Panchayat on Thursday. Two disabled individuals from Dharbandora and one from Sanvordem enrolled themselves in the voters list.
According to Fernandes, there was good response from voters during the programmes organized throughout the month.
“Supreme Court has ordered to make electoral infrastructure more accessible for voters with disabilities. Their full participation can only be achieved by enrolling them in the voters roll,” Fernandes told The Goan.
“Today, there was enrollment of three persons with disability. Two were from Dharbandora and one from Sanvordem,” he informed.
Fernandes said the family members of the new entrants were happy as they got voting right. “Many expressed their happiness while we were enrolling them,” Fernandes added.
Earlier, Fernandes had organized several programmes to create awareness in regard to enrollment in voters list.
