SANGUEM
The Cacora Solid Waste Management Plant (SWMP), which was inaugurated last year and made fully operational, presently caters to a meagre 18-20 tonnes of garbage per day as against its capacity to handle 100 tonnes of garbage each day.
Of the 100-tonne capacity, the SWMP is capable of handling 60 tonnes of wet and 40 tonnes of dry waste on a daily basis.
Since it was commissioned, the SWMP has not worked to its full capacity primarily due to the fact that it basically caters to the garbage disposal needs of 30 villages located in the hinterland and four municipalities of Sanguem, Curchorem, Quepem and Canacona.
In addition to catering to the waste disposal needs of the 30 village panchayats and four municipal councils, the plant also collects garbage from schools on a fortnightly basis through its waste disposal collection agency.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 173 crore, the SWMP is spread across 81,000 sq mtrs at Cacora village of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council.
The SWMP has a provision to generate 2-3 KW of gas-based plus solar power everyday by using the factory’s entire rooftop measuring 16,000 sq mtrs.
The project which is constructed under the aegis of the Department of Science, Technology and Waste Management and Goa Waste Management Corporation works on the lines of the SWMP at Saligao but the design of Cacora SWMP is upgraded to take into account the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and some improvements from the SWMF at Saligao.
The Cacora SWMP has separate lines for wet and dry waste with the organic extruder being at the heart of the system.
