Schools in villages have fared better compared to city schools in Bardez in the SSC Board exams, the results of which were released by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) on Wednesday.
Rural schools have performed better than schools in urban areas in Bardez taluka, with six schools in villages getting cent per cent results, while only one school in Mapusa city scoring a perfect 100 score.
The Sanjay Centre for Special Education at Porvorim has also got 100 per cent result in the Board exam. All 30 students who appeared for the exam passed.
In all, eight schools have registered 100 per cent result in the examination out of 56 schools in Bardez.
The eight schools that registered 100 percent result are St Joseph HS, Arpora (35 students), St Britto’s HS, Mapusa (126), St Thomas Girls HS, Aldona (64), St Elizabeth HS, Pomburpa (29), Mae de Deus HS, Corjuem (36), St Clara HS, Assonora (97), Sanjay Centre for Special Education, Porvorim (30) and JnyanVikas School, Porvorim (5).
People at the helm of the education field admitted that the trend was changing and schools in villages were doing better.
“Earlier, there was this mentality to admit children in city schools. The trend is reversing now. If the child is given proper attention and has the backing of parents, they will definitely do better,” said Sr Sharon, headmistress of St Thomas Girls High School, Aldona.
The headmaster of St Britto’s HS, Mapusa, refused to get into the debate of changing trends, but stressed on the point that comparatively students in villages were fewer in number.
“The number of students appearing for exams in village schools is fewer than those appearing in city schools,” said Fr Cedric Fernandes, headmaster of St Britto’s HS, Mapusa.
The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) chairman J R Rebello wasn’t surprised with the changing trend, where village schools have started scoring over schools from urban areas.
“The education department is trying to strengthen schools in villages and the SSC results only reflect that trend,” Rebello emphasised.
He said the department has started skill-based, National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) courses in 38 government and non-government schools, which is also one of the reasons for the village schools to do better.
Out of 56 schools in Bardez, 11 are in urban Mapusa while the remaining 45 are scattered in villages.
Out of 3,276 students who had appeared for the exams, 3,040 have cleared the hurdle, with Bardez achieving a success rate of 92.79 per cent.
Among the government schools in Bardez “ Government HS, Nadora scored 90 per cent result where nine students out of 10 that appeared passed and Government HS, Alto-Porvorim got 75 percent result with 30 students out of 40 clearing the exam.
The SSC examination was conducted from April 1 to 20 at 26 centres around the State.
