St Cruz locals want Babush to sign off

Even as former MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate’s plan to contest from St Cruz constituency is on the back burner for the moment, residents from Santa Cruz have begun a signature campaign to thwart any such move in the future.

One of the villagers who is actively involved in the campaign showed a copy of the signature campaign and informed that the same would be presented to Monserrate once hundreds of more signatures are garnered.
“Presently, we have garnered more than 500 signatures and we are targeting over 2,000 signatures, so that better sense prevails and Tony Fernandes remains the MLA of St Cruz for the next five years,” the villager added.
Meanwhile, the trend of MLAs resigning and re-contesting has caused concern among some Catholic priests, who have voiced their opposition to such trend.
Santa Cruz parish priest Fr Alexander Pereira, who has also voiced concern in his sermon, informed The Goan that the elections have been held and people have elected people of their choice.
“So, there is no need for these elected members to resign and re-contest,” said Fr Pereira. “It is not just a waste of time and money but also a mockery of the people.”
Asked if he was referring to the probable situation that could arise in St Cruz constituency, Fr Pereira stated that he was making a general statement in light of the trend of legislators resigning and re-contesting the polls.
