Speaking to media persons, Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar said, “Presently, the State Government is giving utmost priority to solar power generation. Within the next two months Goa will come up with a Solar Energy Policy.”
Stating that many companies are interested in setting up solar power plants in Goa, he said, “Unless we finalise the Solar Energy Policy, we have decided not to grant permission to any of the companies. We will promote solar power generation.”
He also informed that Goa has sufficient power to meet the requirement and it has has no plans to generate power through a coal block.
“Our requirement of power is low compared to the other states. We don’t have any shortage of power. The only thing is sometimes we have to buy it at higher prices”, he said. “If you look at the power generation plants across the country, they find it difficult to sustain themselves especially the coal plants. The maintenance cost of these plants is very high. So at this point I don’t think Goa needs to have a power plant.”
