State may set up institute for automated driving licenses

PANAJI: Transport Director Nikhil Desai has said that the state government is working towards having an institute of automated driving licenses, which will ensure that only deserving people get driving license.

Desai was speaking at the 8th State Road Safety Week, which started on Monday, February 5, and will go on till February 11. He said, “One of our proposals is to have an institute of automated driving licenses. At the moment, the percentage of people passing the test to get a driving license is very high. Once they get a driving license, we don’t know how responsibly they will drive. Therefore, we are going to have an institute of automated driving licenses, which will ensure that only deserving candidates get driving license.”

Desai further said that there is also a proposal to have an institute for vehicle testing and certification in Goa so that all vehicles are evaluated in the right spirit. During the course of the inaugural of the road safety week, a number of traffic police officials emphasised on the need to revoke driving licenses if people don’t drive responsibly.

Desai continued, “The concept of road safety is taken very lightly by people. In 2016, we lost 336 lives on Goan roads. In 2017, we lost 328. Those people who use mobile phones and don’t wear seat belts while driving are inviting disaster.”

A number of senior traffic police officials highlighted that significant number of people dying in accidents on roads are young students. The loss of their lives is a huge emotional and financial loss to their families and even to the economy. Considering that, traffic police officials made an appeal to students and staff of Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) to drive safely on the roads.
