The figures revealed that 55,140 students enrolled in various primary schools in the State are studying in English comprising of 57% of the total number of primary students in the state.
A distant second was those who chose Marathi with 31,359 students opting for Marathi making up 32% and only 6564 students or 6% opting for Konkani as the medium of instruction at the primary level.
Statistics of enrolment of primary school students in the State has revealed that of the 55,140 students studying English at a primary level, 30,653 are doing so in aided schools while only 24,487 are doing so in unaided private primary schools. The government runs no English primary schools.
On the other hand, among those who are studying in Marathi at a primary level 20,394 are studying in government run schools and only 10,965 are studying in aided Marathi schools.
