In a bid to reduce the stray dog population on Salcete beach belt, representatives of Mission Rabies and Worldwide Veterinary Services will descend on the beach belt every Thursday to sterilize the dogs in order to reduce the population of strays.
Thursday saw representatives of Mission Rabies and Worldwide Veterinary Services at the Colva beach at the invitation of Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas. The team caught around nine stray dogs which will be sterilized before they are released back to their area after treatment.
“After the recent increase in dog bites incidents in Benaulim, I have teamed up with Mission Rabies & Worldwide Veterinary Services to start a drive to sterilise the dogs along the beach belt in Benaulim constituency. On day one, around nine dogs were caught by the team from Colva beach. This exercise will continue on the beach belt”, Venzy said.
Venzy pointed out that after the recent dog bite cases, he had conducted a meeting with officials and Mission Rabies and veterinary experts and it was decided to start a drive to sterilise dogs first. “This exercise will be carried out on the beaches in Benaulim constituency. We are making efforts to make a fixed sterilisation station for Benaulim’, he added.
Mission Rabies Education officer Akshay Pal informed that every Thursday, team of Mission Rabies will come to Benaulim to identify the dogs and sterilise them. This will basically reduce the population of dogs”, Akshay added.
