Work on the Vasco Up-Ramp connecting the city with the four-lane port connectivity flyover is almost complete and plans are afoot to open the road below the ramp on a temporary basis during the Damodar Saptah festival.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borkar along with Gammon India officials inspected the work on Up-Ramp near the IOC junction at Vasco on Thursday morning
Speaking to reporters, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said both service roads below the Up-Ramp will be of 6 metres each.
"The project is almost 90% complete with broad roads below the ramp. This Up-Ramp will be a new exit from Vasco and will decongest the city’s traffic movement. Motorists wanting to go out of the city can use this Up-Ramp that will connect Vasco to the four-lane port connectivity flyover and people will not need to use a long cut via Chicalim to move out of the city,” said Salkar.
“We are thankful to Gammon India for providing a 6-mtr road on either side below the Up-Ramp that will decongest the city from traffic. We have also built gutters on either side of the road to ensure smooth flow of rain water.”
“Besides, there are many other projects taken up simultaneously at various places, which will give a total revamp to Vasco city" said Salkar.
MMC Chairperson Girish Borkar said the service roads below the ramp would be opened temporarily ahead of the upcoming Damodar Saptah festival.
“We are planning to get the service roads open during Saptah festival. Last year, we had to shift furniture stalls to the Tanya open space which caused lot of inconvenience to residents,” said Borker.
“This year, however, we will have the furniture stalls at the same locations after the road is opened temporarily. We are celebrating the 125th year of the annual Damodar Bhajani Saptah festival and we do not want that residents and devotees to be inconvenienced during the festival.”
“We appreciate Gammon India for agreeing to our request to open the service road on a temporarily during the Saptah festival.”
Vasco traffic PI Shailesh Narvekar, who was also present for the inspection, said all options would be studied before the traffic is allowed to move along the service roads.
