PANAJI: The State government has proposed amending the Goa Panchayati Raj Act and the Municipalities Act to impose stricter fines for open waste disposal.
Addressing a meeting on Solid Waste Management Disposal at Sankhali Ravindra Bhavan, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant warned to even seized vehicles caught littering in villages.
"Not only will the vehicles be seized but the company responsible for sending the waste will also have its registration revoked,” he said while discussing the issue of waste dumping in villages.
He further addressed various grievances and discussed solutions with panchayat members in preparation for an upcoming waste management workshop.
To keep an eye on illegal dumping, Sawant instructed panchayats to appoint a dedicated person to monitor littering in their respective areas and act against persons caught dumping waste.
Sawant also announced that dedicated garbage collection vehicles will be deployed in each taluka to improve waste management.
In another decision, Sawant empowered panchayats to disconnect water and electricity connections for those failing to pay garbage tax. “The panchayat will issue a notice and subsequently remove the light and water connections,” he said adding that industries are also subject to garbage tax collection.
Illegal houses will also no longer be entitled to electricity and water connections, which he said is based on High Court directives.
