An exercise aimed at the restoration of water bodies, including community ponds at Sucaldem in Chinchinim village has yielded bountiful fish harvest for the farmers.
Just around 8-10 months ago, several community ponds in the village had undergone significant de-silting and re-stocking projects in a concerted effort to revitalize local water resources.
The initiative, aimed at improving water quality and boosting local fishery resources, involved the removal of accumulated silt to increase water capacity and enhance the aquatic environment.
Following the desilting process under Water Resources Department, farmers had introduced variety of fish species with the support of Krishi vigyan Kendra and ATMA South Goa into the rejuvenated ponds at Sucaldem supported by local MLA Cruz Silva, Communidade of Chinchinim, Chinchinim panchayat and local farmers.
Initiated by local Panch Frank Viegas as part of a broader strategy to ensure sustainable fish populations and support local livelihoods, the ponds provided an ideal habitat for the fish, thanks to the improved water quality and increased nutrient availability resulting from the desilting efforts.
Says Panch Frank Viegas: “After eight months, the community gathered to harvest the fish. The results exceeded expectations, with a substantial and healthy catch reported.
"The successful harvest not only underscores the effectiveness of the pond restoration and fish restocking efforts but also promises significant economic benefits for the local community. The project stands as a testimony to the positive impact of environmental stewardship and sustainable resource management”.
Frank added: “Farmers at Sucaldem has made a good beginning. And, we hope to encash on the Orgors (traditional ponds) dotting the area. Sucaldem is blessed by ponds, which has been de-silted now can be exploited for pissiculture as well”.
