HC has accordingly adjourned the hearing on petition filed by Kashinath Shetye for two weeks time and has afforded the government this time to file its reply in
the matter.
Petitioner Shetye pleaded the case to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation while alleging that the Goa Police reluctance to proceed with an effective investigation stems from the haftas and other financial gains that many police officers secure from matka operators across the State.
HC has told the Goa Police that if it fails to find out the origin of matka gambling, then it may form an SIT. This observation was voiced after the CBI counsel argued that it lacks the manpower and the necessary infrastructure to investigate the deep-rooted ill
of matka.
On account of this disclosure, the Goa government was asked to offer its stand and the government offered that it will convene a meeting at the earliest with the police officials to discuss the matter.
