The talathi Amresh Naik, who is attached to the Mormugao Mamlatdar office, on Friday visited the hill cutting site at Consua in Cortalim and submitted his report to the Mormugao mamlatdar.

Speaking to The Goan, Naik said, “When I reached the site, no activity was underway, except for the shovel which was stationed there. I asked the contractor's representative for the documents. After examining the documents, I was not satisfied, and hence directed that the work be halted till further orders.”

It may be recalled that Cortalim Comunidade Attorney Joao Philip Pereira had issued an NOC for the extraction of mud on comunidade land without the approval from the higher authorities, claiming that permission from the Administrator of Comunidades or the government was not required to extract mud, since it was for a national project.

In fact, the survey record which was shown to The Goan on Tuesday also bears the names of Konkan Railway, Ministry of Roads and Surface Transport, PWD (Govt of Goa) and the Comunidade of Cortalim. However, except for the comunidade NOC, there was no other NOC or permissions from other authorities in the file.

Admitting that the report had been submitted, Mormugao Mamlatdar Laxmikant Desai said he had not gone through the report and he would submit it to the Deputy Collector.

The Cortalim-Quelossim Panchayat had also taken objection and filed a complaint with the deputy collector and the police to take action in the matter.

Meanwhile, Cortalim ZP member Anthony Vaz told The Goan that he had visited the site on Thursday and Friday and found that there was no extraction of mud.

“Except for the shovel, there was no visible activity at the site,” Vaz told The Goan.
