Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar on Friday said that taxi operators were indirectly responsible for entry of app-based GoaMiles services into Goa following their reluctance to install digital meters.
There were complaints by tourists visiting Goa of overcharging and fleecing by some taxi operators which forced the State government to allow app-based taxi service for the convenience of tourists and also to avoid tourists getting fleeced by taxi operators.
“Earlier I had requested the taxi operators to install meters on their vehicles. Had they done so, GoaMiles would have stopped their operations. However, these taxi operators did not listen to my advice,” said Ajgaonkar.
"Had taxi operators opted for fitment of meters to their vehicles, GoaMiles would have not entered Goa."
Ajgaonkar urged the taxi operators to install digital meters before deciding to hold talks with the state government. "Had the taxi operators installed digital meters then, GoaMiles wouldn't have entered Goa."
Showing optimism, Ajgaonkar said the incumbent Transport Minister could resolve the issue.
