In perhaps a first, a team of top doctors from Switzerland have been collaborating with doctors at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Bambolim conducting “hand surgeries” and also dishing out treatment since the last eight days.
GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar, who addressed a press conference along with the Swiss doctors, said the team has so far successfully performed dozens of hand surgeries and has also treated over 70 patients. “Their work involved three departments -- Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Anesthesiology. This collaboration will benefit the GMC a lot,” Bandekar, himself a top Orthopedician. said.
Hand surgery deals with surgical and non-surgical treatment of problems in the hand or upper extremity, including arthritis.
The collaboration came about after some of these Swiss doctors visited the State’s premier healthcare institution three months ago, Bandekar said.
“They met our minister Vishwajit Rane and convinced him of the benefits of the collaboration,” Bandekar added.
