The Congress on Friday said that there was an attempt to misguide the House and challenged the Speaker’s reasoning that an adjournment motion given on previous day was not valid the next day.
“The Speaker said that the adjournment motion given yesterday doesn’t hold good today. Absolutely wrong. Here is an attempt to misguide the House. We had put adjournment motion yesterday under rule 68. It is up to the Speaker, of course, to accept the motion or not to accept the motion,” said Luizinho Faleiro, Navelim MLA and former chief minister.
The Navelim MLA was addressing the media in the office of the Leader of Opposition in the assembly along with the Leader of the Opposition Babu Kavlekar, MLAs Jenifer Monserrate and Aleixo Reginald Lourenco.
Continuing further, Faleiro said that it was a very, very important motion concerning the health of the people of Goa. “Formalin is a very serious matter. Nobody can brush it aside. It is not only affecting the people ordinarily, it is affecting pregnant mothers and newborn children. It is affecting the wellness of the people,” he said.
The former CM said that the rules and regulations were made for the functioning of the House. He said till today the adjournment motion was before the House and it has not been disposed of by the Speaker as there was no order.
“And even if the Speaker had issued an order we would have put one more motion. So the Speaker saying that there is no motion today is factually and legally wrong,” Faleiro said.
Questioning the Speaker’s rigid stand for not allowing discussion on an important issue, Leader of the Opposition Babu Kavlekar said it was a matter of health of 15 lakh people in Goa. “The adjournment motion moved by the 16 Congress MLAs is not only of the Opposition MLAs but of 15 lakh Goans in the State,” Kavlekar said.
“Don’t we have time to discuss such a serious issue pertaining to the people of Goa? In fact, all the 40 MLAs should have been given a go-ahead to discuss the issue,” he added
Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monserrate and Curtorim MLA Reginald Lourenco also spoke at the news conference.
