Thousands of Muslims participated in the Julus procession in the commercial capital to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed on Thursday, as the procession returned to the old route for the first time after four years.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and son Yorigraj descended near the Jama Masjid, Malbhat, the starting point of the Julus procession to extend their wishes to the Muslim community.
The Margao MLA pointed out that the authorities decided to grant permission to the organisers to take out the Julus processional on the old route after making elaborate arrangements.
“The Julus procession route was changed some four years ago. The same has been brought back to the old route, passing through the Margao Municipal Council”, he said.
Chairman of Goa Haj Committee Urfan Mulla thanked the Margao MLA as well as the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, besides the district and police authorities for granting permission to hold the Julus procession on the old route.
He said the organisers and the participants would spread the message of love and peace to the people of Margao, while stressing on the need for all the communities to live in harmony.
Thousands of Muslim participated in the Julus procession, throwing traffic out of gear at many places, including the Borda road, Ana Fonte road.
DySP Santosh Desai said the procession passed off peacefully without any untoward incident, adding that the police tried to regulate traffic along the route.
