A number of houses and agriculture were damaged in different parts of Navelim-Bicholim following thunderstorms on Thursday night. The loss to property has been estimated at Rs 10 lakh.
The areas which were affected by the thunderstorms included Phanas Wada, Bharoni Wada, Pavlar, Kasarwada, Maini, Betal Mandir, Durig Wada, Ghadi Wada and Phal Wada in Navelim.
About 10 houses and plantations were damaged, while a number of trees fell down at many places.
The impact of the storm was such that roofs at some houses were blown several metres away.
Fortunately, there was no loss or injury to life.
Four fire tenders from Bicholim, Valpoi, Old Goa and Ponda were pressed into service to clear the fallen trees and debris from Thursday night till Friday evening.
As soon as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was made aware of the incident, he took stock of the situation and ordered a report on the damages to be prepared through the deputy collector, agriculture officer, and the fire services.
Deputy Collector Ramesh Gawkar and Mamledar Vimod Dalal immediately sent teams to carry out relief work and assess the damages.
Sarpanch Kalidas Gawas and members of Navelim Panchayat, Talathi, Agriculture Officer Pankaj Pokle, and Emergency Control Room officers have started relief work and have begun assessing the damages.
Gawas also informed that power supply have been disrupted since Thursday night after several trees fell on electricity wires. Efforts to repair/replace the damaged wires and restore electricity supply continued till Friday evening.
