Tibetan community marks World Human Rights Day at Baga

The Tibetan community recently observed the World Human Rights Day along with the 31st anniversary of awarding the Nobel Prize to the Dalai Lama at Baga.

The advisor for the Tibetan community at Baga and Calangute, Tsewang Chophell, highlighted the abuse the community face in Chinese Occupied Tibet.

“For the past five years, the US think-tank, Freedom House ranked Tibet among the worst places in the world in violation of Human Rights. There is repeated violation of UN conventions and peaceful protests are brutally suppressed,” Chophell said.

He further said prisons were filled with Tibetans detained simply for exercising their desire for freedom and for waving Tibetan flags and calling for the return of the Dalai Lama.

He said there was still hope as the world was waking up to the threat posed by China.

“The US Senate has passed a Bill recognising Tibet's Independence while the head of Tibetans in exile was welcomed into the White House for the first time. The Indian government and army are bravely standing against the might of Chinese PLA,” he said.

Following a simple ritual, the gathered members celebrated the Noble Prize Day by cutting the cake and reciting prayers of the well-being of the world and the Dalai Lama.

Discussions were also held about Tibetan identity and the reasons for their exile.

Choepell informed that such events and dialogue help the generation of Tibetans born outside to preserve their culture.
