Acknowledging the concerns of locals on overflowing sewerage chambers in Camarkhazan, Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo said JICA authorities need to be given an opportunity to complete the project before making any adverse judgement against the technology.
“There are eight to nine sewerage chambers from where water is constantly overflowing in Camarkhazan. Residents of the area are concerned since the water appears to be coming from the ground,” Ticlo said.
“Camarkhazan lies in a high water table area. Locals fear once the sewerage project is commissioned the ground water table will get contaminated and so will their wells,” he continued.
He said a meeting was arranged with the locals and the engineers of the JICA where the officials explained the technicalities of the
project.
JICA officials explained to residents that the chambers would be scientifically sealed and there was no chance of sewerage water leaking into the ground and affecting the water table.
“They have explained to us in detail about the operation of the sewerage system. I have asked local residents to allow them to do the sealing work and the consequent hydro test,” Ticlo said.
The Aldona MLA said that sewerage project was the need of the hour as a lot of buildings were coming up everywhere and land was a scarce commodity in Goa.
“But the job (of laying the sewerage lines) has to be done properly,” he added.
He disclosed that once the sewerage project was commissioned, under the contract, JICA will be accountable for any untoward incident for a period of
one year.
