Tillari canal develops leaks at Torsem; farmers call for repair or replacement

PERNEM
A leakage in the Tillari canal has led to wastage of water at Torsem-Pernem, prompting the WRD to place plastic sheets to prevent further waste of water.

Local farmers have appealed to the State government to either repair the canal or to replace it with a pipeline.

According to locals, the government is planning to divert water from the Bailpar, Kasarwarne river to this canal and there is also ongoing work to install a pump house in the area. However, the canal which passes through plantations in Pernem has been damaged at various places resulting in wastage of huge amounts of water.

The flowing water has even reached the houses of locals in the last four days.

“The government’s intention was to provide water to farmers through this canal, but the quality of work has been below standard. The WRD has tried to cover up this substandard work by placing plastic sheets in the canal,” complained a local farmer Shivram Parab.

Farmers said they had requested the WRD to lay a pipeline instead of building a canal but added that the WRD went ahead with the canal in 2009.
