Time for another revolution to rid Goa of plastic: Parrikar

Says dustbins will be compulsory for all buses from next month

PANAJI
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday appealed to Goans to make Goa plastic-free by Revolution Day, next year.
Parrikar was speaking at the Revolution Day function held at Azad Maidan, Panaji on Sunday.
“We have an opportunity to bring in another revolution if there is clarity of thought and singularity of purpose. We have to decide if we can make plastic-free and garbage-free Goa by Revolution Day next year,” he said.
Stating that the State Government is very clear on the issue of tackling garbage menace, he said, “From next month onwards we plan to make it compulsory for all buses to have a dustbin to enable passengers dump their waste like bottles, instead of throwing it outside from buses. We will issue the order next month.”
“This bin can be emptied at the respective bus stands. While government will proactively participate in creating facilities, let us keep ourselves away from plastic,” he appealed.
Speaking earlier, Freedom Fighter Chandrakant Pednekar requested the Chief Minister to resolve the issue of evacuee property in Mayem by December 19, this year.
Reacting to this, Parrikar assured to resolve it at the earliest but did not give any specific deadline.
Indirectly hinting at the comments made during the Hindu Convention held at Ramnathi, Ponda, he said, “The Constitution gives us the right to freedom of speech. But if anyone tries to take law in their hands, the Government will not hesitate in taking any stern action against them.”
