CANACONA

As part of Shigmosthav celebrations among the Mahajans of Shri Mallikarjun Temple, the annual traditional Avtar-Purush was performed in Agonda on Wednesday.

Hundreds of people from all over the taluka and especially those who have settled in cities, made it a point to visit the village and later queue up to take ‘Kovul’, a unique way of seeking blessings of the Avtar-Purush.

Earlier, the Avtar-Purush ceremony was conducted, where the spirit of Lord Mallikarjun is believed to control the Avtar-Purush.

During the ceremony, about six men hold Tarangs while three others turn and swirl swords under the influence of the spirit of God.

Every year, the visit of Avtar-Purush and giving away of ‘Kovul’ is organised at a fixed spot in Voile-Agond. Later in the evening, the Avtar-Purush team visits chosen Mahajans at Dessaiwada, Mudkud, before the team departs for yet another ritual at the Gulem hillock.

Former chief minister Digambar Kamat, other politicians and some high-profile bureaucrats and police officers are some of the prominent visitors for the Avtar-Purush at Agonda.

This year, however, Kamat, was not present for the ceremony.
