Amchem Daiz 4.0, an Inter-Sector Cultural Competition was organised by the St Jerome Parish Youth, Mapusa, on August 15 at 3.30 pm under the theme “Festam-Porbo Daiz Amchem, Jezu Sovem Ekvottan Samballchem.”

Despite the pouring showers, the enthusiasm of the participants remained undiminished as they performed with energy, joy and devotion.

The celebration centred on Goa’s rich local feasts and traditions, including some that have slowly been forgotten or have long vanished from community life. The entire setting was created in an eco-friendly manner, keeping nature and the earth at heart.

The programme opened with a prayer service, followed by a colourful parade portraying traditional Goan feasts such as Nal’lanchem Fest, Kelleanchem Fest, Purumentachem Fest, Pejeche Fest, Konnsachem Fest and Matyechem Fest.

Parish Priest Fr Thomas Lobo warmly welcomed the gathering, highlighting the importance of preserving our traditions, while catechism children presented a beautiful song written and composed by him.

A special highlight was the traditional Kunbi Ghumot performance presented by the Youth under the guidance and training of Fr Aestrony Costa. Patriotic dance, Brass band, melodious singing, energetic performances, creative presentations and delicious Goan sweets prepared by parishioners added to the festive spirit.

The prizes and spot prizes featured locally grown fruits and vegetables, honouring the hard work of Goa’s farmers and celebrating the abundance of the land.

The performances were graced by the Judges, Fr Valancio Fernandes, Assistant Parish Priest of Saligao, and award-winning comedian Matthew De Souza, adding more value to the event.

With the support of Fr Aestrony Costa and Fr Cidroy Fernandes, the celebration concluded with a vote of thanks by the Coordinator of S.J.P.Y.G.

Sector 5 (Purumentachem Fest) emerged victorious, followed by Sector 8 (Konnsachem Fest) in second place and Sectors 3 & 4 (Kelleanchem Fest) in third. The celebration concluded at 7 pm, but the joy of the evening lingered long after the final applause.

“Amchem Daiz 4.0 was more than a competition. It was a heartfelt celebration of Goa’s heritage, bringing generations together to rediscover traditions, remember forgotten feasts and cherish the cultural treasures that make Goa truly special,” said Fr Lobo.

“Amidst the rain, music, laughter and fellowship, the Parish came together as one, carrying home not just memories of a beautiful evening, but a renewed love for its faith, culture, community and beloved Goan roots.”
