Vehicular traffic on the NH66 was disrupted for well over an hour at Dramapur-Sirlim on Monday morning after a branch of an overgrown tree came crashing down on a container truck.
The incident brought to the fore the indifference and apathy on the part of the concerned authorities including the district disaster cell to order the trimming of the overgrown trees along the highway.
The branch of the tree came down on the container and blocked a significant width of the highway, disrupting traffic on the busy route.
Locals pointed out that the fire brigade did not reach the spot immediately thus delaying the operation.
The container driver pointed out that he was transporting the goods from Amona to Balli when the incident occurred.
Locals as well as the panchayats along the NH 66 stretch have been demanding trimming the branches of the overgrown trees, but in vain.
Residents pointed out that Monday's incident should come as a wake-up call for the authorities including the district disaster management authority to direct the agencies to trim the trees before the ensuing monsoons.
