Numerous of these signals have been proposed on major cross-roads and T-junctions in Panaji, Mapusa, Ponda, Porvorim, Vasco, Margao and Valpoi and could lead to a complete overhaul of Goa s road traffic. The recommendations were forwarded by the Traffic Police Headquarter to the department of transport two years ago. Of these, two traffic signals have been installed at O Coqueiro junction and Holy Family Church junction due to sustained efforts from a local MLA. Speaking about these two signals, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said, “We collaborated with a private entity who developed the automated-digital signal software for us under Corporate Social Responsibility. It has improved and channelised traffic tremendously allowing pedestrians to cross calmly.” After installation of the first traffic signal at O Coqueiro junction two years ago, the team analysed its impact and proceeded to install the second one at Holy Family junction. Khaunte informed that four to five more locations along the highway are being considered for installation of traffic signals and one pedestrian crossing to promote the concept of pedestrian first . It was learnt that installation of each signal costs between `15 to 20 lakh. In other words, installation of 53 traffic signals could cost anything between `8 to 10 crore. Speaking about the lack of traffic signals on Goan roads, Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander said, “We will be reviving the proposal again very soon. In addition to this, we will also make a detailed presentation to the Chief Secretary and Chief Minister on measures to improve road safety in Goa.” DGP Chander further commented, “Traffic signals are required to regulate traffic which is beyond the capacity of a traffic circle. In such cases, the traffic then waits and goes allowing deployment of less number of personnel. Pedestrian safety can also be boosted.” He observed that there is large number of such junctions across the State and highlighted the need for active cooperation from a number of departments to correct the layout of Goa s roads.
