While a signal was installed at the Bolshe junction on the Eastern bypass on Monday, three more traffic signals will come up at the busy Old Market junction, Nehru stadium junction and the Arlem circle. All the four traffic signals have been sponsored by a private agency under Corporate Social Responsibility.
That’s not all. Fatorda will received dozens of CCTV cameras under MP Shantaram Naik’ MPLAD scheme, with TCP Minister, Vijai Sardesai mooting annual maintenance contract for the round-the-clock functioning of the CCTV cameras.
After inaugurating the traffic signal at the Bolshe traffic junction in the presence of MMC Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai, DySP Traffic Prabodh Shirwaikar and others, the TCP Minister said a beginning has been made to address the traffic mess in Fatorda by installing the traffic signals. “We have inaugurated one signal and three will soon follow suit. All these signals have been sponsored under the CSR,” he informed.
He also announced plans to support city-based NGO MARG to spread awareness on traffic and road safety in the safety. DySP, Traffic Prabodh Shirwaikar said the four arm traffic signal will operate full-fledged after trial runs.
In the meantime, the TCP Minister said the govt has resolved take on topmost priority a proposal to construct a modern wholesale fish market at Madel at a cost of Rs 25 cr, with amenities such as effluent treatment plant.
After launching the wholesale fish market road beautification work worth Rs 50.77 lakh, Sardesai said the beautification work includes construction of a footpath, besides vehicular parking for both fish laden trucks and visitors to the market.
The TCP Minister told the media that while the beautification work will begin soon, the process for the construction of a new market will be set in motion in the coming days.
“I can assure the people of Madel-Fatorda, who had to bear the stink and nuisance from the wholesale fish market that things will change in the next one year at the wholesale fish market,” he said, adding that the government is committed to bring around a turnaround at the wholesale by getting rid of the eyesore and stink.
He said the market re-construction plan will be executed either by the Fisheries department under the Blue revolution scheme or by the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) or the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).
Once finalized, the wholesale fish market reconstruction plan will be placed before the stake holders, including the wholesalers, fishermen and others before giving the final nod.
