Motorists in Mapusa will soon have to follow traffic signals in town.
If all goes well, new traffic signals will be installed at three key areas in Mapusa by the end of the month.
Digital Designer, Porvorim, responsible for the production of the traffic signal units will initially install the signals at three crucial junctions “ Gandhi Chowk, Court junction and Tar junction.
“We will physically install at least three signals by May 31. The connection to the signals has to be provided by the government which in turn depends on the electricity department,” said Sanjay Jain of Digital Designer.
“Once installed, we will monitor the flow of traffic for at least three to four days,” he added.
Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) had decided to install traffic signals at major spots in the town on the recommendation of the traffic police.
These signals are expected to instill discipline to bring some semblance of order on the roads and help in smooth vehicular movement.
On January 18, MMC in its meeting unanimously decided to give a go-ahead to install traffic signals and blinkers at strategic locations in Mapusa.
Digital Designers have offered to install the signals at various locations along with its maintenance for a period of 10 years, free of cost.
The company, however, has sought permission to advertise on the traffic signals.
The council had also resolved to install such traffic signals at PWD pedestrian crossing, Nanda-deep building, Karraswada junction, near Mapusa Police station, Hutatma Chowk, near Joao Menezes Pharmacy, near Hotel Vilena junction, near Hindu crematorium at Dattawadi, near main gate junction in the market, near Usapkar junction, Khorlim, near Housing Board junction and near Peddem stadium.
“We have requested installation of CCTV cameras on the traffic signals, which will help police to identify traffic offenders,” said MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari.
According to Sanjay Jain, it won’t be possible to install CCTV cameras initially but these could be installed at a later stage.
