Traffic trouble, parking problems hit Sanguem

Sanguem bus stand and the town area have been battling haphazard parking and negligence in implementation of traffic rules.

CURCHOREM

Sanguem town has been facing the parking problem and violations of traffic rules on a day-to-day basis.
Recently, a man was proceeding in his car from the market road on Bazaar day, whereas it has been informed to the locals months ago that four-wheelers are barred from using the market road on Wednesday.
When asked why he was using the road as it can create problems for pedestrians, the car driver in turn asked whether there are traffic police or home guards to regulate the traffic. He also asked why there are no signboards or barricades erected at the market road to give clear intimation to the locals about the recent traffic rule.
Two-wheelers are often parked in haphazard manner in the absence of markings, zebra crossing, sign boards.
When contacted, Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) Chief Officer Pramod Dessai blamed the Traffic Cell Curchorem for neglecting the Sanguem town in implementation of traffic rules.  “A few years ago, SMC had sent a letter to the Traffic Cell Curchorem requesting to mark the parking area, but no traffic police was seen on the main road of Sanguem or at the bus stand,” said Dessai.
SMC Chairperson Suryadatta Naik admitted that there is haphazard parking and violation of several traffic rules. “In order to put the parking issue and traffic rules violation to rest, one best solution is that the local MLA, councillors, chief officer, traffic cell and other stakeholders should come together and discuss the issue,” said Naik.
Traffic Cell Curchorem PSI Peter Fernandes said his staff are doing their duty properly.
But when he was given the ground reality, PSI Fernandes assured to inquire into the matter and give special attention to traffic regulation and parking in Sanguem.
