All sub-offices of the Directorate of Transport will sport point of sale (PoS) machines or card swipe machines after the government approved installation of these machines through the payment gateways provided by Bank of India and HDFC Bank.
An order signed by Director of Transport Nikhil Desai, has mandated that all assistant directors of transport and drawing and disbursing officers (DDOs) "offer necessary cooperation to the bank officials".
Bank officials will visit the offices and configure the PoS terminals to accept payments through debit and credit cards and the money would be transferred directly to the respective accounts of the DDO.
Earlier, Director of Transport Desai had informed that the Directorate was in the process of migrating services online so that agents and touts lose business. "In the next few days, we will cease cash transactions by installing credit and debit card Point of Sale machines in all offices," he had said.
The installation of PoS machines at the RTO offices were due for a long time and the lack thereof was a favourite target of those opposing demonetization to illustrate that while the government is encouraging cashlessness, the government itself was yet to go cashless.
With the completion of the process, the Directorate of Transport will be one of the few departments that involves interaction with the public to have taken the cashless
route.
Some other departments have gone partly cashless and are now receiving payments online but are also receiving cash at counters at their department.
