Dempo Sports Club huffed and puffed to a solitary goal victory over Calangute Calangute Association to make a winning start to the inaugural AWES Cup 2017 organized by Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportpersons (AWES) in association with the GFA at Duler stadium, here on Friday.

Calangute looked to dominate their famed rivals in the early part of the proceedings but were uanble to break the deadlock. Joston Pereira could have put Calangute in the lead but he missed a sitter. After countering their rivals for the opening 20 odd minutes, Dempo finally got the breakthrough. Mario Mascarenhas unleashed an aerial ball but Calangute goalkeeper Jason did not gauge the flight of the ball and left it to defender Amar Haldankar to thwart the danger, but the last-named misjudged the situation and the ball went into the goal off a deflection. The second session was livlier as there was plenty of goalmouth action as Calangute battled hard to stay in the contest. Dempo were very aggressive as Kapil Hoble almost doubled the score but his 51st minute strike struck the woodwork and the deflection was neatly collected by the goalkeeper. Calangute were in with a chance to equalise but Myron Fernandes' header was collected by Dempo keeper Agnelo Gomes, who had replaced Tyson earlier.
The 5th Fomento all India Fide rating open chess tournament organised by Rudreshwar, Panaji will be held at the Institute Menezes Braganza hall, here from September 6-10.
