Tribal communities have played a significant role in shaping the nation. Leaders like Draupadi Murmu, the President of India, and Ramesh Tawadkar, the Speaker of the Goa Assembly, are a source of pride for the tribals, said Padma Shri Awardee Bhiku Ramji Idate alias Dada Idate.

Idate, a prominent social activist known for his remarkable work in uplifting marginalised sections of society, was speaking on the concluding day of the three-day ‘Lokotsav-24’ at Amone, Poinguinim, on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar emphasised the importance of preserving culture for village development.

“The essence of Goa’s culture lies in its rural traditions, not in the beach culture,” he said.

Tawadkar was praised for his efforts in connecting with the people. “Through Lokotsav, Ramesh Tawadkar has established himself as a leader of the people. It is a matter of pride for the tribal community that Draupadi Murmu is the President of India, and Ramesh Tawadkar is the Speaker of Goa’s Legislative Assembly,” said Idate.

Idate further stated that India achieved true independence in 2014.

“Change requires action, not just talk. Since 1918, there have been attempts to undermine religion and culture in India, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to transform the nation. Ramesh Tawadkar is committed to preserving culture, which makes him a true people’s leader and hero,” he added.

Tawadkar’s mission to improve the living standards of ordinary people is rooted in education, which Idate described as a revolutionary approach.

Ram Singh Rathwa remarked that events like Lokotsav inspire individuals to move forward.

He encouraged reflection on how Lokotsav has evolved over the years.

He also highlighted the potential of today’s children. “The intellectual capacity of today’s youth far exceeds what we had in our childhood. In this scientific era, it’s vital to keep experimenting, and Ramesh Tawadkar has been successfully doing so,” Rathwa said.

The event saw speeches from notable leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Babu Kavlekar, Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira and Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar. Other attendees included SC/ST Commissioner Deepak Karamalkar, South Goa Zilla Panchayat President Sanjana Velip, and various sarpanchas and officials.

Several individuals were felicitated for their contributions to society, including Shraddha Shirodkar, Ashwini Gaonkar, Leena Kuttikar, and others, who received shawls, coconuts, certificates, and badges of honour.

During the Konkani-Marathi Sahitya Srijanotsava, Kavita Amonkar’s book ‘Gaganbharari’ was released. Renowned literary figures, including Jayanthi Naik, Dr Pramada Desai, and others, were honoured for their contributions.

The programme was moderated by Kalpita Naik, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Damodar Velip.
