CANACONA
Barely two days after the union government sanctioned Rs 4.9 crore to widen the narrow NH66 road at Karmalghat in Canacona following a number of road mishaps, a truck fell on its side at the foot of Karmalghat early Tuesday morning. The driver and cleaner escaped unhurt in the mishap.
The truck loaded with bauxite was proceeding down the Karmalghat when the vehicle went off the road and hit a roadside culvert. The left tyres went into a trench and the loaded truck fell on its side.
The driver claimed that he was negotiating a turn on the slope and tried to avoid two oncoming vehicles when the mishap took place.
Incidentally, the mishap took place at the foot of Karmalghat, where a side road connects to Agonda village, and some women sit by the roadside at the junction to sell local produce. The truck fell almost opposite to the Agonda road.
It may be recalled that the Karmalghat section of NH 66 and the narrow Gulem section have witnessed a number of mishaps.
On March 26, the Centre sent a letter to the State indicating that an amount of Rs 4.9 crore has been sanctioned to remove traffic bottlenecks along the Karmalghat-Gulem NH66 section.
