Another opposition-backed councillor who joined the BJP on the eve of the election of the chairperson was offered the plump post of market committee chairman in Mapusa Municipal Council.
Various subject committees including the crucial two “ standing and market committee “ were constituted at a special council meeting, the first after the new council took over under the Chairperson of Shubangi Vaigankar.
Councilor Viraj Phadke who ditched the Mapshakarancho Ekvott panel to join the BJP was elected as the chairman of the significant market committee in the Mapusa civic body.
The chairman of the market committee supervises the entire activity in the market including the financial aspect which gives it such significance.
Chairperson, Shubanghi Vaigankar becomes de facto chairman of the key standing committee which passes all decisions that have financial implications in the council.
Chandrashekar Benkar, Tarak Arolkar, Sushant Harmalkar and opposition-backed, Shashank Narvekar made up the remaining members of the panel.
The following are the chairman and members elected to other subject committees.
Market Committee: Viraj Phadke (chairman), Sainath Raul, Barbara Carasco, Ashirwad Khorjuvekar and Kamal D'Souza.
Planning Development Committee: Kayle Braganza (chairman), Priya Mishal, Sushant Harmalkar, Sainath Raul and Sudhir Kandolkar.
Public works, sanitation and drainage committee: Ashirwad Khorjuvekar (chairman), Viraj Phadke, Kayle Braganza, Tarak Arolkar and Anvi Korgaonkar.
Environment, garden, preservation of open spaces committee: Kishori Korgaonkar (chairman), Vikas Arolkar, Swapnil Shirodkar, Priya Mishal, and Nutan Bicholkar.
Lighting of public streets, places, public receptions, ceremonies, fairs, entertainment and library committee: Vikas Arolkar (chairman), Kishori Korgaonkar, Barbara Carrasco, Kayle Braganza, and Anand Bhaidkar.
Chairperson Shubhangi Vaigankar informed that all the members of the subject committees were elected unopposed.
All 20 councillors were present for the special council meeting held at the MMC hall. Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza and Chief Officer Clen Madeira were also present.
