A female turtle trapped in a fishing net near the Galgibaga shore was rescued by Dhristhi’s life-savers and later released into the sea early Saturday morning.
According to Forest Department rescuers at Galgibaga, an angler who had gone fishing on rocks between Galgibaga and Talpona shore saw a turtle struggling to break free from a fishing net (Maag) spread by fishermen the previous day and alerted the forest rescuers at Galgibaga Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
The forest rescuers immediately sought the help of life-savers of Dhristhi Life Savings Services at Palolem to bring the trapped turtle ashore. The life-savers from Palolem immediately swung into action, and two life-savers came on a jet-ski, bringing the trapped turtle along with the fishing net onshore at Galgibaga.
Later, assisted by forest rescuers, the turtle was freed by cutting the fishing net, and as there were no physical injuries, the female turtle was released back into the sea.
According to the forest rescuers, the female turtle was on the way to Galgibaga shore to lay eggs but was caught in the fishing net near the rocks portion of the north side of Galgibaga sea-shore. “This mother will definitely come back to lay eggs either on the Galgibaga or Talpona shore later in the evening or at nighttime.”
