CANACONA

Two major rivers in Canacona have risen to danger levels as heavy rains have lashed the taluka since the past 48 hours, reviving painful memories of the flash floods in 2009.

Authorities issued a warning of rising water levels in the two major rivers at Talpona and Galgibaga early Monday afternoon, after both rivers witnessed a sharp rise in water levels.

With rains continuing to strike the taluka, the observatory at Chapoli dam recorded 83 mm of rainfall since midnight of Sunday-Monday. The seasonal rainfall recorded so far is 4442 mm. Incidentally, the Chapoli dam, which has a storage capacity of 38.75 RL (reduced level), had reached 38.84 RL and was overflowing at the spillway.

The Talpona river already began to flow above the danger mark by Monday evening, after the water level had reached 8.20 mtrs by 5 pm, crossing the warning level of 7.985 mtrs.

Similarly, the water level at Poinguinim point of the Galgibaga River reached 3 mtrs at 12.50 pm, while the warning level is 4.855 mtrs.

Strong winds were also witnessed in the taluka and people residing along the river banks were also warned of heavy rains and flash flooding in the vicinity. Strong waves also pounded Canacona’s coast.

Warnings have also been issued for winds between 35-45kmph on Tuesday, while heavy rainfall is also expected and this could lead to flooding, swelling of rivers, mudslides etc., sources told The Goan.
