The online Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) facility set up at the Navelim Primary Health centre (PHC) has left UNICEF delegation Karin Kallander impressed, with the delegation saying other countries should learn and emulate India in this area of the health sector.

Dr Karin Kallander along with other delegates who attended the G20 Health meeting in Goa descended at the PHC, Navelim on Thursday morning to take stock of the health amenities at the centre with stress on the ANM services.

“I am very much impressed with the ANM health workers, the way they are providing services to women and children. I am impressed over the knowledge of these workers in their fields. We have to learn from India and other countries should emulate India in this field,” she told the media after interacting with the PHC officials.

Saying the digital platform was initially supported by UNICEF, Dr Kallander said this portal has helped to collect data and prepare a database to identify the diseases. It is fantastic to see the government owned platform which is extending support for women and children,” she said.

She added: “These are the digital tools that are needed to track the women and children. Many times, when you are pregnant, the women get vulnerable, the children get vulnerable to various diseases. Intervention is important to ensure quick provision solutions.”

Saying that the digital platform is nicely designed, Dr Kallander, however, said there is room for improvement.

Saying that UNICEF has been extending support to India at many levels in the health sector, she underscored the need to support the digital system, which will help improve the data system in the whole of India.

When asked over the take away from her visit to the Navelim PHC, she said she is very much impressed with the host of facilities at the PHC.

When asked on malnutrition of children, Dr Kallander said malnutrition leads to vulnerability of children to various diseases. “Malnutrition does not only lead to starvation, but it causes many a disease. It is not just because of lack of food, but the right food that needs to be given to children at the right age,” she added.
