D Silva and others raised an uproar over the inaction of the police and electricity officials over the power theft in broad daylight by workers to carry out welding work on a fishing vessel. He told the media that though linesmen from the Velim sub-station came to the site, they dragged their feet in initiating action by seizing the welding machine on the lame excuse that the junior engineer is not on duty. “We fail to understand how come the police and power officials turned a blind eye to the illegal power tapping. Both the owner and the welding contractor should have been arrested by now and their equipment seized,” D Silva said. When The Goan later contacted PSI Chawan to shed light on the incident, he said the power officials later seized the machine, but made it clear that the police would initiate action only upon receiving complaint from the power department.
