Residents of Chandor have threatened to stop mining trucks from plying on the narrow roads of the village, even as they alleged that the RTO and Traffic cell were unable to implement the notification banning the movement of these vehicles.
The issue dominated at the Sunday Gram Sabha where villagers questioned the Sarpanch and Deputy Sarpanch on the steps initiated by the panchayat body to stop mining trucks from plying through the village roads. Deputy Sarpanch Marcel Fernandes explained to the people that the panchayat had made numerous representations to the RTO Enforcement wing to crack a whip against the erring truck operators. He pointed out that RTO officials have made it quite clear that they cannot deploy their officials at Chandor on a routine basis for want of adequate manpower and asked the panchayat to approach the traffic police asking for personnel to be posted at Gudi.
Marcel later told the media that though the RTO and Traffic police had challaned a number of truck operators, the action has not deterred them. He said the villagers have now threatened to stop the trucks as both the RTO and the Police have failed.
