Valpoi locals fume over garbage piles

Residents in Valpoi have been left fuming over the garbage piles accumulating in different parts of Valpoi town since the last four days, as municipal workers have not cleared the garbage in the town.

VALPOI

According to sources, the Director of Municipal Administration had sanctioned the Valpoi Municipal Council some labourers purely on temporary basis as a part of disaster management plan for three months starting from July, but Chaturthi holidays were excluded from the regular pay.
"If these labourers were needed during the Chaturthi festival, prior permission had to be taken from the DMA as per the guidelines. But this time, the VMC did not obtain this permission and hence, the workers refused to work during these days as they would not be paid for their work," a source told The Goan.
As a result, garbage piles have accumulated in many parts of Valpoi town, making it difficult for pedestrians and motorists alike.
"The VMC should have anticipated this situation and should have made adequate arrangements to clear the accumulating garbage in the town. The municipal council has failed to act in this matter," complained a local, Sunil Katkar. When contacted, VMC Chief Officer Cynthia Misquita claimed that permission to deploy workers during the Chaturthi had been held up due to the moral code of conduct on account of the Valpoi constituency by-poll."
"In fact, the DMA is supposed to clear the file seeking permission as routine administration work, but I don't know why it was not done. In any case, I have instructed our regular labourers and supervisor to clear the garbage piles in the town," said Misquita.
