VALPOI
Daily-wage workers at the Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) have threatened to go on an indefinite strike if their salaries are not paid by noon on Monday.
Speaking to media persons, they complained that they had not been receiving their daily wages on time for the last six months.
“We have been making frequent requests for timely wages, but they have been ignored. Considering the Eid festival on Sunday, we wanted the VMC to pay the wages on Saturday, but we did not receive the payment. We will work on Sunday and Monday morning, but will go on an indefinite strike if wages are not paid by Monday,” complained a worker.
According to sources, about 40 workers are working on a daily basis in the VMC.
“When we go to enquire about our wages, we are often abused in the VMC. We have raised this issue with VMC officials, but they have not paid attention to our grievances,” lamented another worker.
The State government had announced a new salary structure for workers in the State, whereby each worker would be paid Rs 700 per day and the provident fund would be deducted from their salary. Workers have complained that they have not received these benefits.
