South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus, IAS, on Saturday reviewed the scrutiny of claims submitted by vendors and other persons affected by the devastating fire at the Vasco Sunday Modern Market.
The review meeting was held in the presence of the scrutiny committee constituted to verify the claims submitted by those who suffered losses in the fire.
Following the blaze at the Municipal Market, several vendors and other affected persons have submitted claims seeking compensation and relief from the government.
The scrutiny process is being undertaken on priority to verify the claims and establish the extent of losses suffered by the affected persons, enabling the authorities to consider relief measures without unnecessary delay.
The Collector reviewed the progress of the verification exercise and the work being carried out by the committee to ensure that the claims are scrutinised before further action is taken on the proposed assistance.
According to officials, while records have revealed that there are around 133 hawkers and 16 shops in the market, claims have been submitted by 107 affected persons.
While 50 claimants stated that they were owners of their respective businesses, the remaining claimants included persons operating businesses from rented premises and persons carrying on business through subletting arrangements.
Officials have created two categories — allottees and present occupiers — to simplify the verification process.
