With Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday requesting Goans to avoid mass gatherings to control the spread of coronavirus, doubts are now being raised over the Vasco Shigmo float parade on Wednesday.
The Vasco Shigmo is usually organised by Murgao Nagrik Shigmotsav Samiti (MNSS), which charts various programmes to be held during the annual Vasco Shigmo celebrations.
This year, MNSS members had elected two presidents, former MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik and Shekar Khadapkar to head the MNSS, but they were ineligible to serve as presidents with the model code of conduct for ZP elections in force and the committee was then headed by MMC Chief Officer Gaurish Shankhwalkar.
Now with the latest advisory of the health department, the MMC chief officer is expected to take a call on Monday and decide on the Vasco Shigmo celebrations.
“With the new advisory, we are unsure of what will be the decision especially because Canacona and Bicholim Shigmo committees have decided to cancel their Shigmo float parades,” said the source.
“The Vasco Shigmo float parade is on Wednesday and as such, we still have time to decide. We have heard that Shankhwalkar will convene a meeting with MNSS members to discuss and decide on the Vasco Shigmo celebrations.”
“The final order will be issued on Monday. As of now, the cultural and entertainment programmes that are part of the Shigmo celebrations are being carried out in front of the MMC building. We have to wait and watch on what will be decided for the Vasco Shigmo festival,” added the source.
