VASCO
The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday said fish vendors from the Vasco fish market would get an opportunity to review plans for the proposed new fish market complex in Vasco before the work is undertaken.
The MMC decided to take the fish vendors into consideration, after the fish vendors had highlighted their grievances and had demanded action against several migrants selling fish outside the Vasco fish market. The fish vendors had also complained that stalls outside the fish market had resumed selling fish at wholesale prices.
They had demanded to be updated about MMC’s plans to build a new fish market and complained that they were not informed about the tender nor the plans passed by the council.
Supporting the fish vendors, MMC councillors then demanded that the chief officer initiate action on people illegally selling fish and Councilor Krishna Daji Salkar event demanded sealing of shops to set an example and deter the illegal sale of fish.
“Several illegal carts have mushroomed yet again and MMC needs to begin a drive yet again and initiate strict action against those illegally selling fish,” said Salkar.
MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar then assured the fish vendors that the council would take stock of the situation and take action against those selling fish outside the market.
“The MMC will take up works on the new fish market soon and in the next 10 days, I will invite the contractor appointed along with the plans to the MMC office. So that the fish vendors can review
the plan and also suggest changes, if required,” said Gaonkar.
“There is no way the market will be built against the wishes of fisherwomen and they will get a chance to look at the plans before we go ahead with the project. If they are unhappy with the plans, we will not go ahead with the project,” said Gaonkar.
