The illegal road built in a No Development Zone (NDZ) at Cavelossim, which locals claimed is intended to connect the plot purchased by ex-India cricketer Ashish Nehra and the sand bags stacked on the beach surrounding the property has brought Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas and Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz face to face on Wednesday.
The duo were engaged in a verbal spat in full public view at an inspection of the land in question arranged by the Benaulim MLA with officials of the Town and Country Planning department (TCP). They traded barbs and allegations, accusing each other of trying to protect the ex-India cricketer’s property.
The Benaulim MLA publicly demanded to know how come the Cavelossim Sarpanch has till date not issued a notice to the cricketer/land owners to clear the illegal road from the NDZ area, saying the Sarpanch and the Panchayat is deliberately going slow just because the party in question is a cricket celebrity. “The Indian cricketer is a blue eyed boy of the BJP. He enjoys the protection of the Goa BJP government. The Cavelossim sarpanch is not issuing the order to clear the road and restore the land to the original condition because he had supported the BJP”, Venzy thundered.
Not to be lagged behind, Sarpanch Dixon claimed that the sand bags have been placed on the Mobor-Cavelossim beach at the behest of the MLA just to protect the land owned by the cricketer. Venzy sought to counter the Sarpanch by pointing out that the work is being undertaken by the Water Resources department, adding that the Sarpanch too was present for the inauguration.
Dixon, however, wondered how come sand bags have come up only along the beach affecting the property owned by the cricketer. “The sand bags have been placed by the WRD to protect the beach. Unfortunately, the property abutting the beach belong to the cricketer”, retorted a visibly agitated Benaulim MLA.
Meanwhile, Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz has lodged a complaint against Paul Lobo for what he alleged is his defamatory statement by making false propaganda over projects coming up in the village.
