A meeting convened in the Cansaulim office of RDA Minister and Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha on Thursday to deliberate on the removal of the pontoon from Arossim beach has decided to issue a letter of permission to the vessel owner to begin the salvage operations.
The letter which will be issued by the collector will contain many terms and conditions including starting of the works within two days from handing over the letter and wind up the operations within a maximum of 20 days, restore the beach to its original pristine condition, remove the scrap and metal debris by using metal detectors immediately and also compensate the fishermen for the loss caused to them.
Saldanha, however, expressed surprise that even after three major meetings neither the vessel owner nor his representatives had attended the meeting despite being responsible for the environmental disaster.
Saldanha also informed that the next meeting will be convened on Thursday to review the developments regarding the removal of the vessel.
