GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar on Tuesday said the latest ward reservations had achieved victory for women at the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) elections, but felt that the ward reservations were not done in a sequential rotation as directed by the court.
Addressing a news conference, Amonkar said the petitioners from Vasco were willing to extend support to people in approaching courts if there was injustice to some aspirants who could have been affected by the new reservations. “It was only after petitioners had fought the legal battle that reservations were granted to the women in Mormugao constituency, which forms part of the MMC polls,” said Amonkar.
“We have been fighting against ward reservations for a long time and since the previous reservations were not done properly, Shraddha Amonkar and Shanti Mandrekar filed petitions in high court.”
“Since the supreme court upheld the high court verdict, we have got justice for women, especially in Mormugao constituency as three wards have been now reserved for women, as opposed to the earlier reservations which had not a single ward reserved for women in the constituency.”
“However, we still feel that though we have achieved victory for women, ward reservations have been wrongly done and still not as per sequence and rotation, as directed by the supreme court,” said Amonkar.
Amonkar said they would, if needed, be prepared to go to court again.
“If people are still aggrieved about the new ward reservations, our doors are open as Shraddha Amonkar and Shanti Mandrekar as petitioners can approach court anytime and there is no issue with that,” said Amonkar.
Others who spoke include Nilesh Navelkar, Nitin Chopdekar, Shankar Polji and the two petitioners from Vasco, Shraddha Amonkar and Shanti Mandrekar.
